The latest version of Android is always preferable. But never buy the version below android 6 version. As many of the modern apps minimum requirement is android 5. When you use it with minimum requirements you cannot experience its full potential.
I will be recommending at least Android 7 version when you buy a phone because as the days go by you like to upgrade your Smartphone to the latest version. But an android only works two years perfectly. So, better buy a phone at least a version below the latest version Google released.

Version number 1.0 which doesn’t have a code name and the initial release was on 23rd September 2008.
Version number 1.1 which was internally called as “Petit Four” which is not an official name. It is initially released on 09th February 2009 for HTC Dream only.
Version number 1.5 which has a code name called as “Cupcake”. It is initially released on 27th April 2009.
version number 1.6 as “Donut” which was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29 and the initial release was on 15th September 2009.
version number 2.0 as “Éclair” which was also based on Linux kernel 2.6.29 and the initial release was on 26th October 2009 with an improvement. And with minor changes, there are two updates with version number 2.0.1 and 2.1 initially released on 3rd December 2009 and 23rd January 2010.
Version number 2.2 which has a code name called “Froyo” short name for “frozen yogurt” and based on Linux kernel 2.6.32. To it, there were three updates as 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3 which were released on 18 January 2011 and 22 January 2011 and 21 November 2011.
version number 2.3 which has a code name as “Gingerbread” initially released on 6th December 2010. And with two updates to Nexus S for minor improvements released in December 2010 and January 2011. And with a major update as 2.3.3, followed by four updates with the version number as 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 2.3.7 as released on 9th February 2011, 28th April 2011, 25th July 2011, 2nd September 2011 and 21st September 2011.
Version number 3.0 which has a code name as “Honeycomb” initially released on 22nd February 2011. With two major updates as 3.1 and 3.2 released on 10th may 2011 and 15th July 2011 followed by six minor updates as 3.2.1, 3.2.2, 3.2.3, 3.2.4, 3.2.5 and 3.2.6.
Version number 4.0 which has a code name as “Ice Cream Sandwich” publicly released on 19th October 2011 which the source code became available on 14th November 2011. It released four updates with the version number as 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 on 21st October 2011, 28th November 2011, 16th December 2011 and 29th March 2011.
Version number 4.1 to 4.3 with the released date between 9th July 2012 and 24th July 2013 which is known as “Jelly Bean”. And a minor update to Nexus 7 LTE as 4.3.1 on 3rd October 2013.
Version number 4.4 which has a code name as “KitKat” actually initial code was “key lime pie” released on 31st October 2013. Followed by four updates 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 released on 5th December 2013, 9th December 2013, 2nd June 2014 and 19th June 2014.
And there is the Special version for android wear which is Smartwatches. The name was similar but version number as 4.4W released on 25th June 2014. Followed by 4.4W.1 and 4.4W.2 with UI updates released on 6th September 2014 and 21st October 2014.
Version number 5.0 which has a code name as “Lollipop” which redesigned the user interface built on responsive design language called “material design” released on 12th November 2014. With minor updates as 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 released on 2nd December 2014 and 9th December 2014. And with a major update as 5.1 released on 9th March 2015. There is a small update as 5.1.1 released on 21st April 2015.
Version number 6.0 which has a code name as “Marshmallow” released on 5th October 2015. A minor update as 6.0.1 released on 7th December 2015.
Version number 7.0 which has a code name as “Nougat” released on 22nd August 2016. And there is 7.1 followed by 7.1.1 and 7.1.2.
Version number 8.0 which has a code name as “Oreo” released on 21st August 2017 which is a major update to Android.
Version number 8.1 which was released on 5th December 2017.
